Miles of stunning beaches, golden sand dunes, chilled beach bars and the best Surf in Europe

It was not long ago that Baleal was a quiet beach stop on the road to Peniche but word spreads and news of the miles of golden sand, great surf and stunning sunsets has enticed more and more vistors each year.

Miles of golden sand beach stretch along the coast to Baleal island and then continues in a huge bay round to Peniche. At Baleal relaxed beach bars and surf schools are dotted along the natural sand dunes overlooking the expanse of beach in front. A causeway allows you to drive over to the ‘island’ although it is very rare that the ocean actually crosses it now.

In summer the beach is lifeguarded and there will always be a stretch of beach on one side of the causeway or the other that is calm for paddling

For many the draw to Baleal and Peniche is the surfing and people come from all over the world to surf the waves on the Silver Coast. The Moche Ripcurl Pro Portugal competition brings the world best surfers to compete at Super Tubos and neighbouring beaches. If you are here during the competition, usually end of October, it is well worth going down to watch.

Eating & Drinking in Baleal

Baleal is host to the new Portugal dining revolution where traditional flavours are combining with stylish settings and interesting menu options. Here are our recommendations for great restaurants to visit in Baleal.

Run by the ever-welcoming Christian, 3House is situated right on the beach at Baleal (the first beach bar as you enter the car park). With great views over the beach, 3House is a lovely spot to enjoy lunch, a drink or a hearty breakfast before a day’s surf. Offering simple but good food such as burgers, pizza, omelettes, smoothies etc.

A little further along Bar da Praia is the perfect spot to relax with a beer to watch one of the stunning sunsets the area is famous for.

Sushi Fish is up there with the best sushi restaurants you are going to find. Excellent quality and delicious sushi prepared in front of you as you would expect, by professional sushi chefs. Traditional sushi and some with a local twist we eat here regularly and definitely recommend it. The wine selection is really good too. It isn’t cheap (especially if you over-order, it all looks so good!) but is a great choice for a special night out. Sushi Fish gets busy so book ahead to make sure you have a table. You can book a table online here

What’s Nearby

The bay stretches all the way from Baleal at one end to the fishing harbour town of Peniche at the other.

Every evening the fishing boats leave harbour and return to port during the early morning with their catches of Sea Bream, Sole, Halibut and of course, sardines. The catches are on sale that day in the big covered market in the centre of Peniche and in the many fish restaurants throughout the town (remember a lot of restaurants in this area are closed on Mondays because the fisherman don’t go out on Sundays, and if it isn’t fresh then it isn’t worth eating!). Our favourite seafood restaurant in Peniche is Pro Fresco.

You could easily cope without a hire car during your stay in Baleal as most is within walking distance, but if you did you would be missing out on exploring so much of what they area has to offer.

Within a 30 minute drive of Baleal you could be exploring the medieval town of Obidos, choosing fresh fruit and vegetables and the colourful daily market at Praca da Fruta in Caldas da Rainha, or sailing or windsurfing on Obidos Lagoon.

Location

Baleal is 1 hour north of Lisbon on the A8 motorway. There are regular buses from Lisbon to Peniche and for there it is possible to get a taxi to Baleal. We recomend that guests have a car so they can fully explore the area and also to reach all the beaches in the vicinity, but the majority of our properties in Baleal are walking distance to Baleal beach and the various beach bars, cafes and restaurants nearby.

Nearest Towns

Obidos – 35 Minutes drive

Caldas da Rainha – 45 Minute drive

Peniche – 5 minute drive

Nearest Supermarket

There is a large Intermarche supermarket at the entrance to Peniche. There is also a good smaller supermarket in Baleal called SuperLagide. It also has a very popular bar / terrace as well.
