Dining options have changed quite a lot in the last few years. It was not long ago that options were quite limited and it was only really traditional portuguese restaurants were available. There are still al lot of traditional portuguese restaurants available, and the standard of traditional dining has certainly increased, but recently we have seen a lot of fresh new restaurants opening up, bringing a modern approach to Portuguese cuisinse, as well as more European restaurants available too.

Here is our recomendation and all of these are restaurants that we visit often, however there are new places opening all the time so by all means go off-list and let us know if you find somewhere we should include here!

As a general rule, restaurants on the Silver Coast open at 7pm for dinner. Many close on Sunday evenings and all day on Monday, because the fisherman don’t fish on Sundays.

Cozinha d’el Rei

Owned and run by Jorge and Paula (pictured here), this popular restaurant is located in the village of Serra d’el Rei (8 minutes drive from Praia d’el Rey) and serves home baked pizza, traditional Portuguese dishes plus pasta and salads. Jorge and Paula are very friendly, speak English perfectly and welcome families with kids – there’s a children’s corner with toys, low tables and chairs. At lunch we recommend you try the prato do dia (dish of the day). During the July and August it’s best to book or you could have a long wait.

Open every day for lunch and dinner except Sunday evening and Mondays. Tel : (00351) 262 909 392 and (00351) 969 510 818
Located at Serra d’el Rei

Tribeca

Tribeca opened in 2010 and is a great alternative to Cozinha D’el Rey, which is always very busy. The back of this restaurant faces the Holiday Rental Portugal office on the main street in Serra and the entrance is around the corner on the hill going down to Praia del Rey. Open every day except Monday and Tuesday lunchtimes.

Em Banho Maria

Also opened in 2010 in an attractive high-ceilinged building in Serra d’el Rey on the hill going down towards the service station on the right. Serving traditional Portuguese food in a traditional Portuguese way. Summer: Open from Monday-Sunday. Winter: Open Tuesday – Sunday (closed Monday).

3House

Run by the ever-welcoming Christian, 3House is situated right on the beach at Baleal (the first beach bar as you enter the car park).  With great views over the beach, 3House is a lovely spot to enjoy lunch, a drink or a hearty breakfast before a day’s surf. Offering simple but good food such as burgers, pizza, omelettes, smoothies etc
Located at Baleal

Bar do Bruno

A bit further along the beach is Bar do Bruno, a relaxed beach bar offering fresh fish as well as options like omelettes, burgers etc. A great setting to enjoy the sunset or to wind down in the evening with a cocktail or at one of Bruno’s legendary Beach Parties
Located at Baleal beach

Cantina de Ferrel

Freshly prepared pizza and pasta using locally sourced, fresh produce, Cantina is one of the more recent non-traditional restaurants that have openned up in the area. Delicious food served in a layed-back ‘cooll’ environment, Cantina is great for a casual dinner or lunch out.
It get’s busy though so best to book ahead.
open from 7pm for dinner and from 12.30 for lunch at weekend. Closed Tuesdays

Sushi Fish

Sushi Fish is up there with the best sushi restaurants you are going to find. Excellent quality and delicous sushi prepared in front of you as you would expect, by professional sushi chefs. Traditional sushi and some with a local twist we eat here reguarly and definitley recomend it. The wine selection is really good too. It isn’t cheap (especially if you over-order, it all looks so good!) but is a great choice for a special night out.

Gaucho

Traditional Brazilian restaurant, very popular with the locals and for meat lovers. Get into the mood and start your meal with a caiparinha. We recommend ‘Nachos’, tender steak cooked yourself on a hot stone at your table or ‘espadarte’, meat kebabs. Open every day except Wednesday.

O Traçadinho

Driving to Obidos (IP6/Exit 15) and driving towards Pingo Doce supermarket, turn left at the roundabout just before Pingo Doce and pass through the aqueduct & up the hill following the signs. 5 mins & it’s on the left. Serving consistently good food & even some vegetarian dishes (a rarity in Portugal), this is a delightful, homely restaurant with attentive and friendly staff.  Well worth a visit.

Closed on Wednesdays. Tel : (00351) 262 959 489
Located just outsdie Obidos

Petrarum Domus

Petrarum Domus was once a wine press and has been re-modelled into a characterful restaurant. It’s inside the walls of Obidos on the main pedestrianised street in Obidos (Rua Direita), about half way up on the right. It has a good selection of dishes which all come with nicely prepared vegetables. There are also pasta dishes. Well worth a visit.

Located in Obidos

Pizza Bella Milano

Take the A8 north and come off at exit 17 marked ‘Caldas da Rainha Sul’. Turn right at the junction and continue until you come to a roundabout where you turn left. At the second roundabout go straight over and the park appears on your right hand side. Follow the road round and you come to a roundabout with the statue of the ‘Rainha’, the Queen, on it. Here turn left and go down the hill. Take the 1st right up the hill and go straight over at the crossroads. On the right here is the Pizzeria Bella Milano serving good pizza and pasta at great prices.

Located at Caldas da Rainha

Mãe d’Água

Going south is an excellent restaurant called Mãe d’Água. At the T-juntion in A-da Gorda where you turn left for Obidos, turn right. Follow this road for about 7km. The road runs parallel with the A8 which you’ll see on your left. Eventually you’ll arrive at a roundabout with a wine press in the centre. Turn left and drive up the hill. Descend down the other side, round some bends and at the foot of the hill as the road starts to climb a bit there is a big sign pointing to the restaurant. The food is excellent – definitely worth the drive.
