Silver Coast Golf Guide
Portugal’s Silver Coast is fast becoming recognised as one of the hottest new golfing destination in Europe. With a variety of courses a short drive from one another, this area is set to overtake the Algarve as the go-to place for golf holidays in Europe
Setting the standard in Silver Coast Golf is the established Praia d’el Rey course which regularly features in the upper rankings of many Top 100 lists. Fast becoming a serious challenger is the beautiful Royal Óbidos course, the last to be designed by Seve Ballesteros. Here we have preferential rates, so please ask if you would like to make a booking.
Praia del Rey Links Course
The Praia Del Rey 18 hole par 72 championship links course was designed by American architect Cabell B. Robinson, listed as Portugal’s best course in the 2002/2003 Peugeot Golf Guide and rated 13th Best Continental Europe golf course by Golf World magazine. The course is set in extensive grounds of pine forest and undulating dunes with spectacular views over the Atlantic. With nine holes wending through the pine trees and nine hugging the Atlantic cliffs, Praia D’El Rey is a demanding test where the premium is on accuracy.
Designed by the top British golf architect Donald Steel, the views of the surrounding countryside from this golf course are spectacular. The resort is still under construction but the golf course is open and provides an exciting contrast to Praia d’el Rey. When the resort is fully completed and the landscaping gets established around the villas and townhouses the overall effect is going to be stunning. We visited when the course opened and this is what a Praia Del Rey owner had to say:
” Bom Sucesso had been open for just a month when we played this excellent new course. We found it a challenging and enjoyable test with superb views of the lagoon, sea, Caldas da Rainha and beyond. In terms of a Silver Coast golf holiday it’s a complete contrast to Praia Del Rey in style, the altitude change is considerable with several steep gradients, well-placed water hazards and olive trees to negotiate. The greens and fairways are excellent and well established throughout the course. Good luck as you negotiate the tricky 17th/18th finish! “.
Royal Obidos is another new resort to the area and the beautiful 18 hole championship course is a serious challenger to Praia del Rey. The course, the last to be designed by Seve Ballesteros is open and provides another opportunity to test your skills. The resort itself is also still under construction, but the Club House with Pro Shop, excellent restaurant bar, members’ lounge and a large terrace with incredible views over the golf course and the ocean beyond opened in 2013.
